My 1st Appointment

I had my first prenatal appointment yesterday. I was really impressed with the Doctor. His name is Dr. Joseph Glenn and he specializes in High-Risk cases. In reviewing my chart and my history with me, he was genuinely surprised that my previous Dr's didn't catch the fact that Madi wasn't growing as big as she should have. He said they should have known before she was born that she was so small. He also talked extensively to me about testing and genetic counseling. Honestly, I don't feel like we need to put ourselves through all the extra testing, just to see if there is a chance that something could be wrong with this baby. He did say that they will be doing some of the tests after our 20-week ultrasound anyways, including some High-Resolution Ultrasounds. That will be interesting, usually the images on Ultrasound are hard to decipher. I do feel like it would be beneficial for Jim and I to talk to the geneticists they have on-staff. I feel like there is so much about baby James's condition that we know nothing about. Maybe there has been some recent research done that can shed some light for us. I do know that if this baby is a boy, there is a significantly higher risk that he could have Lissencephaly also. Having had 2 little ones with genetic disorders, we're at a pretty high risk anyways. So because of that I'm nervous about this pregnancy, mostly about my own ability to raise another special-needs child.

I did feel really good about my appointment, and feel a lot more confident in Dr. Glenn than I did with my previous Doctors. I feel like I will be more than a number on a chart this time and that I'll get more specialized care. One thing did concern me, though. Dr. Glenn said that my uterus is measuring large. I was 10 weeks and 1 day along yesterday, but he said my uterus was measuring at atleast 12 weeks and he sounded somewhat surprised about that. I was surprised, because I have typically measured small in the past, especially in the beginning like this. I asked him about the possibility of multiples, and he said the possibility is small but that he couldn't rule it out at this point. Wow, wouldn't that be a challenge! He did say that he thinks it is more likely that it's just bigger because this is not a first pregnancy. Even though it wasn't like this with Aspen, or Madi. We did hear baby's heartbeat, and he felt around for a 2nd one but couldn't find one. They will know more at the 20-week ultrasound. I have a feeling there is only one, but who knows?

Hi Lady,
I'm glad to hear you have a specialist- I pray everything goes well. It would be nice to know more about Baby James and his condition, but I understand the difficulty also. You're an amazing woman, mother, and friend. I love you and pray for you and munchkin :)
